About the role
St. Joe Current is hiring a Local Writer to cover everything that requires on-the-ground reporting in St. Joseph County. Civic meetings, in-person reporting, scene work, and Disclosure assignments where local access matters. This is the reporter who puts St. Joe Current in the room when decisions get made.
What you'll do
- Government meeting coverage. County council, city, school boards.
- On the ground, Disclosure reporting. Interviews, document retrieval, and scene reporting.
- Breaking local news. Quick turnaround when the moment calls for it.
- Election coverage. Candidate forums, candidate interviews, polling locations, ballot events.
- Civic event presence. Hearings, town halls, community moments.
What you bring
- Based in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Not negotiable.
- Flexibility for evening and weekend meetings.
- Strong civic literacy. You understand how local government actually works.
- Digitally native. Comfortable promoting your own stories on social.
- Investigative chops, or willingness to grow into them.
- Journalism background a plus (Notre Dame, Purdue, IU, or established local reporting experience).
